Modern Family, for those who have not yet experienced this show, is an American sitcom-cum-‘mocumentary’ broadcast by ABC, and follows the lives of the Pritchett family. The style underlines social issues in society, though is done from such a touching, comical position that by each ending you are bestowed with a feeling of contentment, and with a deeper love for every character than you had the episode before. It is of no surprise, then, that the show was awarded with four Emmy Awards for outstanding comedy series, outstanding supporting actor, outstanding supporting actress and outstanding direction.
In terms of the LGBT movement, Modern Family is incredibly influential and supportive, specifically in its focus on Mitchell Pritchard. In the fourth season, he and his boyfriend Cam will be completing the process of adoption for their second child after welcoming Lily, who is as cute as a button, into their family in season one. By injecting such an optimistic outlook of same-sex partnerships as adoptive parents, it not only generates a feeling of positivity within the gay community, but also examines to those less encouraged by the concept that such parentage is not all that different to the ‘norm’ (symbolised through Jay). By exploring such important aspects of the Western society, and with the assistance of a fantastic cast and ability to vary tone, Modern Family truly stands out, and we cannot wait for season four.
