The Bishop of Buckingham has become the most senior member of the Church of England to show his support for equal marriage. One of our favourite bits is when he says:
'It all comes down to how we see gay people and how we see God. We
don’t actually believe gay people are sick or stunted or criminal. We
don’t believe God is an angry old man out to get us – let’s stop
behaving as though we did.'
Unfortunately, it's not all great news, as a spokesperson for the Church of England has officially said that we shouldn't get used to the Church of England saying things like this, stating:
'Our Church is committed to marriage as being between a man and woman. Opening marriage to same-sex couples would add nothing to the rights
and responsibilities that already exist within a civil partnership but
would require multiple changes to law, with the definition of marriage
having to change for everyone.' Which is a pity, but we're still hoping they'll change their minds, natch. In the mean time, hooray for the Bishop of Buckingham.
