That's Cardinal O’Brien there, who reckons equal
marriage is a “grotesque subversion of a universally accepted
human right”. He is, though, a tireless campaigner for democracy, it would seem.
Today, he spilled some effluent in the Scotsman: “The concern for those who demand
equality cannot allow us to consign to history our understanding of the
basic goods of human society.”
“Clearly, if it is
sensible to hold a referendum on independence, it is crucial that we
have one on marriage. It is the only way the country can move forward on
this issue.
“Let all those who have a view on this subject place their trust in the Scottish people and let Scotland decide.” We're sure the country can move forward without a referendum, considering opinion polls show that people are in favour of the change to equal marriage rights, but never mind - Keith will bang on about it regardless. This is the same Catholic Church that have just pledged £100,000 to fight equal marriage. Instead of fighting things like poverty. Or famine.
