Early in the morning of 28 June 1969, The Stonewall Inn in New York was raided
by Police, a common occurrence at a venue that was part of the underground gay
scene in Greenwich Village. Tired of these raids the patrons fought back and
started what has become known as The Stonewall Riots and triggered the start of
the gay rights movement. A year later the first ever Gay Pride March took place
in New York. Gay Pride is now celebrated around the world in various forms but
New York remains its home. Fast-forward to 2012 and many things have changed
but in this important presidential election year and the continuing fight for
equality the Gay Pride event is more relevant than ever.
Spanning across a number of days, the key events including the march and the
massively popular Party on the Pier take place over the weekend of 23-24 June.
For those that like their events to be big, boisterous, political, fun, camp
and sexy New York for Gay Pride weekend is a must on the bucket list.
